Egyptian Pyramids 8 Day Tour - Abu Simbel
Day 4. Visited Abu Simbel the temple dedicated to Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor this morning. Got up at 2:45 and left for military escort convoy at 3:30am. It's a mystery why we needed it. They escorted bunches of tourist vans and buses to the site. I'm told it's because it's a 3 hour journey in the middle of the desert that if we break down they can help us and they could control our speed. The other explanation is that they can look good conveying us. Who knows.... I know that they were not anywhere in site once we were on the road! Anyway this site was also moved higher from the original site as a result of the construction of the new dam. The mountain was entirely built and then the statues were relocated. We were not allowed to take photos inside because the drawings and cartouches were so well preserved and in colour. The temples were magnificent and grandiose. It was 37 degrees at 10 with a high of 41 today.
